We’ve all been there: lying in bed, replaying a single conversation or a minor mistake on a loop. That “internal radar” doesn’t just scan for trouble – sometimes, it hyper-focuses on it.
If you feel like a failure because of one “wrong” thing, I want you to hear this: You aren’t broken. Your brain is just doing its job a little too well.
The Survival Radar in Overdrive
Biologically, your brain is wired to scan for threats to keep you safe. It’s a wise, ancient survival mechanism. But in our modern world, that radar can go into overdrive, turning a social hiccup into a “shame spiral” that feels like a life-or-death emergency.
The 33% Reality Check: A Balanced View
I’ve heard it said that a balanced life is roughly 33% doing it right, 33% doing it wrong, and 33% fixing it.
It is important to remember that all three phases are equally vital. When we get stuck in the “33% wrong,” we lose our perspective. We forget to celebrate the 33% we did right, and we lose the energy to engage in the 33% that is repair. Living a full life isn’t about avoiding the “wrong” category – it’s about moving fluidly through all three.
Shift the Narrative: 5 Questions to Zoom Out
Next time your brain gets “loud,” thank it for trying to protect you – then kindly remind it to look at the other 66% of the story:
- What have I done right today? (Even the tiny wins count.)
- Where did I connect with a loved one?
- What is one small step I can take to “repair” or “fix” this? (A quick text, an apology, or even just extra rest.)
- What did I learn about myself today?
- What do I want to do more of tomorrow?
You Don’t Have to Walk it Alone
When you’re stuck in the mud of the “33% wrong,” it’s hard to see the exit.
- Lean on your circle: Reach out to a trusted friend; they often see the victories we miss and can help us see the good we do.
- Get professional support: If you’re ready to quiet the loud loops and learn to celebrate your wins, I’m here.
I am a Registered Mental Health Counselor Intern providing telehealth care for women across Florida, and I would love to support you in learning how to zoom out and see the rest of your story.
